Things are just not moving the way they should and you’re beginning to feel pretty darn uncomfortable.  You don’t want to do anything that’s too harsh for your constipation or that gives you the opposite problem so you check out the natural healing remedy that’s recommended from a more gentle and sane perspective.

Maybe you start by eating more oatmeal.  Then you increase your salads.  All to ingest more of that amazing stuff called fiber.  Don’t’ get me wrong.  Fiber is necessary for everyone.  Here’s a great article on fiber from the Huffington Post.  But, it may not be the solution to your current problem.

You can tell that the oatmeal is doing you some good compared to the frosted flakes and you’re feeling pretty holy from eating all of that fresh produce but still nothing happens for days.

So now you’re doing all of that and taking spoonfuls of the straight stuff, isolated fiber.  The most common forms are flax seed, chia seed and psyllium husks.  You started out with one but soon were up to ingesting them all.  Now you’re feeling bloated and gassy.  You’re a little more regular but not really more comfortable.  So what’s with this?

In Korean Sasang Medicine we recognize that the solution for many people is not the solution for all people.  The Four Constitutions are often compared to landscapes.  Landscapes in Nature can have movement issues too.  But different landscapes require different solutions to stuck situations.

So if you’re inner landscape looks like this, then it’s pretty obvious what you need is more moisture.  One of the ways of adding moisture to the intestine is by eating fiber that becomes gelatinous.  Another is to avoid anything that would add heat or dryness to your system.  Nothing moves in the absence of water.

But if your internal landscape looks like this, then it’s pretty obvious that moisture is NOT the answer.  When I tell clients that lamb will improve their digestion they look at me like I’m crazy.  How can lamb provide fiber?  Well, they’re right.  It doesn’t.  It provides lots and lots of warmth.  Once you thaw, everything starts to move because you already have more than enough moisture.  It’s just frozen.

This is one of the many benefits of knowing your Sasang Constitutional Diagnosis, you know exactly what works for you to balance your constitution, eliminate symptoms and regain your health.
